I Tried Dyeing Fabric With Plants From My Backyard

I Tried Dyeing Fabric With Plants From My Backyard
A trick l learned when l lived in Corpus Christie 17 years ago. If you take a dryer sheet and rub it on your exposed skin (NOT ON YOUR FACE), the mosquito still try to bite you, but you won't welp up and itch. Where I worked I could walk to work and everyday l would get bite by those big dark brown mosquitoes. One of the lady's that came to the salon told me about using the dryer sheets. So the next morning before l walked out my door, l rubbed all my exposed skin with it. I could feel they nip at me, but l did not welp up or itch. I used the regular dryer sheets, not those green spongy ones
Wow! thank you! I have used sheets alot for all kinds of projects over the years. As a nurse I made many "scrub" sets (top pant and jacket) with all the pockets I wanted. Good sheets are great and hold up under frequent washings. My mother was scandalized that I did this. She requested I not visit a hospitalized friend of hers in my "sheet pants". They make wonderful robes and caftans. Drapery is perfect. I used a twin over a box spring , then pinned and sewed a dust ruffle to it. True cotton sheets are heavy and require ironing, but percale and mixed fibers are almost wrinkle free. Actually much of the bolt fabrics are mixed or unknown fibers, as are purchased clothing.
I personally don't like using boning. I would just leave it the way you have it now.
I used to do some background work when I lived in LA a few ago before l moved to AZ.
Did I just find the start of the split side skirt obsession?
Thank you for going down that rabbit hole. I have wondered.... I have used thrift store sheets for patterning and mockups, but this adds a new layer of possibilities.
Why do I think Mary Poppins would wear this? 🤣☂👢👢📘📗📖📕📔📙🧾
When you finally take that fabric thirft shop hop across America, please, invite us along.
I'm from Canada and we call the "full" sized a "double bed." I don't know if we have "California king" beds.
I once bought a lovely fabric with pansies for a dress. Not long after, I found sheets in the same fabric. 😂
I totally relate to your experience with craft kits growing up! I’m the same exact way with video games- if I’m enjoying the game too much, and there’s a set end to the story, I stop playing because I don’t want the game to end! But NO ONE gets it unfortunately 😭
Now that I think about it, I would hoard stickers growing up because I didn’t want to just use them up on my shirt or something, I wanted to find the ~perfect~ time and place to use it ….I may or may not have a child size briefcase full of them to this day tbh lol
Not to be snobbish 😮 but yes larger beds require larger pillows …hence the proper pillow cases matching sheet size
I go to Goodwill bins and misc items are priced per pound. The amount of clothing is mind boggling. Next time I go I will be spending my time and money on fabric to re-use. I never get polyester or like. I want all cotton, and full skirts or long dresses can cost less than fifty cents per item because of the light weight and I can spend ten to fifteen dollars and come home with enough fabric to take apart and reuse. I do not do that at regular goodwill as their prices are too high, unless I see something absolutely fabulous.
Can you please make a little online tool that will calculate this for you if you put in mattress size and price?? That would be so cool
In the UK our bed sets only have one sheet in them
If you look at the measurements of sheets from 30 years ago and compare to the measurements of the same category of sheets now, you will find that companies are short sheeting us! Also, the measurements are different from sheet set to sheet set. It's extremely frustrating!!!
holy shit i love this. honestly this type of data gathering and spreadsheet comparison over something rather mundane is totally something i would do.
Spreadsheets! My favorite thing!
Currently in Korea. I'm not sure exactly what the bed sheet measurements are, but I *WILL* tell you that their twin mattresses are at least a couple inches larger than ours in both directions, because while I *CAN* get an American twin fitted sheet onto the mattress, it takes a rediculous amount of force, I can't get it to go over the bottom corners of the mattress, merely the top ones, and the seams at each corner are literally BULGING and STRAINING to contain things. My adult mattress is a Korean King Size, and it's similarly marginally larger than an American Queen, such that my American Queen size fitted sheets don't fit, but American King size sheets are WAY too wide.
twin and twin XL (extra long)
Bed sheet sizes from Swedish IKEA. yeah they are in metric, the US needs to join the rest of the world. Generally bed sizes don't have names, they are listed by the width of the bed. Until recently, beds that were 80 cm were standard, they would just push the twin beds together with a crack between to make a "double size bed". Now wider beds are more common, but many hotels still have crack beds, so, so romantic. 60X120 cm cribs 80X130 cm Kids beds 80X200 cm 120X200 cm 140X200 cm 150X200 cm 180X200 cm 240X260 cm Also look for curtains at the thrift stores for fabric, they used to be made out of cotton, linen and silk. I got three 200X220cm silk curtains for about $25. Plus they were lined, so got that fabric too.
I would rather use “sewist” over “fabric manipulation specialist”🤣🤣
This would have to be the most gorgeous dress ive ever seen 😍 I'd love to make one, a tutorial would be incredible if you ever feel like making another 😍😍😍
Australia we have Cot (baby bed) Single King single (slightly wider longer single) Double Queen King
This is very informative
Try reading “Dubliners”
The quality of the cotton fabric matters as much or more than the thread count. Quality quilt cotton is decent quality for backing, even with a seam. Wide-back cotton is usually slightly looser, so therefore slightly lesser quality. I've bought many different types of cotton sheets, up to the "1000-thread count Egyptian Cotton" which was still an itchy fabric for sensitive skin. The overstock-type stores are selling high-thread count sheets that are low quality cotton. Think of short fibers with lots of ends sticking out, vs long-staple fiber with fewer ends sticking out. High quality "long-staple" "combed cotton" is worth the price for me. High quality long-staple cotton percale and sateen are excellent fabrics, have a great hand, and sew up beautifully. The lowest thread count sheets that I can stand are Ikea brand, and even the blends are fine. You might want to add some of those to your calculations! Synthetic fibers are torture: microfiber pills and feels plasticky to sleep on. And the fibers are plastic, so I feel like I am being poked.
When I was a new wife we had a patio table for our dining table. I needed a 90” tablecloth to cover and hide it, ta da a king flat sheet. Also I have made a few summer long bathrobes out of a flat sheet. Wish we could buy them separately still 😞
Also shower curtains, NOT the plastic ones 😄
Percale (Pair-cal) is the traditional weave used for bedsheets. French word from Persian by way of India, apparently,
I live out in the country. With lots of dirt. I envy your clean floors!
Australia here and the sizes and measurments are the same they just show up in cm's instead of in'. I'm an American that lives in Australia for reg of knowledge. Sorry Just remembered in Australia the "Full" set is called a "double" and we have a king single that is the length of a twin but wider by 1/3.
This is worthy of a doctoral thesis!
Thrifted sheets are the best! It takes more effort though, as you may have to hit multiple stores to find what you need.
I just got back from a trip to Barbados, where I happily discovered fabric as souvenir shopping. In the fabric shop I stumbled upon, they had at least one 105" wide bed linen bolt.
I subscribed for the dog. What a good furby.
I so appreciated your point about patterns. I feel silly saying this, but it never occurred to me that they were a product being marketed and not a necessary thing for making garments. I always gravitate to circle skirts because they make sense to me and I don't have to riddle out a complicated pattern somebody else designed. I'm feeling inspired to try my hand at some more involved free-handing now.
I love this!!! Partway through you say you hope we’re into this, because you are, and I was like, “Yes! I’m so into this!” Thanks for going to all the work to do this deep dive so I can just sit down and understand all the ins and outs without photographing and spread-sheeting hundreds of sheets myself Lol
Don't give Texas any ideas. I can guarantee that a Texas King would deliberately be bigger than a California King, and complicate things.
I love your dress. I think I think you’re kinda really cool! I liked and subscribed and I’ll check you out! Thank you! I think I like you…a lot! We shall see….Ok first time watching and I’m a beliver! I really love your dress! REALLY REALLY LOVE IT.
Higher thread count means thinner threads and smoother, softer sheets
1 meter = 39 inches 1 foot = 30 cm
A California King is 4" longer and 4" narrower than a regular king mattress
I am so loving this. I started using different feet and now I’m kinda sold.
I make mostly spooky things. I tend not to go out of my way to make stuff that isn't, because I am usually trying to fill a hole in my wardrobe. Bed sheets never work for me. 😢
For the closet smell, you can toss those little “do not eat” silica packets you find in random places into the closet and it will absorb the smell. I’ve never done it before but I’ve seen people fold fabric over cardboard squares/rectangles and then stored them upright like books
where do you find 45" width fabric? in 2017 i bought cotton fabric from JoAnn's and laid out my pattern to the 45" width layout. the tie belt went along the selvage edge of the fabric. it hung over 2". i sent a text to my sister in panic and she replied that fabric producers had shrunk the width to 41" a while ago so they wouldn't have to raise the price of material. so i have a skinny tie belt for my blouse. i can still find 60" wide, but 45" i can no longer find. all of my patterns have layouts for either 45" or 60". so question; do i spend more and buy 60" material or buy an extra yard of 41"?
When I saw the overlocker foot and used it the first time, I didn't think much of it. But after several uses and using it together with the fake overlock stitch, everything changed. I would still put that overlocker foot in the "keep it nearby" box. If you don't have a surger, that foot will finish your edges, just like a surger would do (except that it doesn't cut them). If all goes well, there is a fake overlock stitch on your sewing machine (zigzag with 1 straight stitch next to it). What this foot does is: if you run the foot tightly along the edge of your fabric, with the fabric just past the center piece, it takes a small piece of that edge and roll it over slightly. Then he does the zigzag stitch around it, so that your fabric edge is finished very nicely without any threads sticking out, or he ensures that you don't get a messy edge like what happens when you just do a zigzag stitch along a regular edge, and the needle actually goes around your fabric instead of into your fabric because you didn't guide your fabric completely straight under your presser foot. Believe me, for someone who doesn't have a surger, this foot is a godsend.
When sewing up the side seams, do you do them like a normal side seam with right sides together, or do you over lap them like how the top parts that aren’t sewn are overlapped? (Idk if this wording makes sense)
Priced by demand...most people have Queen size beds. More sold makes more money.
