Fun fact, no-one can read lips. Because everyone has different lips and ways of speaking, an experienced lip reader is still guessing based on context. Funny ones like "olive too" looking like "I love you" the difference is very much in the facial expression and context.

Hi 🤗This is the first video I have seen of yours, and I am really enjoying it! You are so cute 🥰 But as I am listening to you about another dress you made (patch work) I am also a hand cutter. And I would have also been so proud to have cut it all out in only 4 hours. I thank you for sharing this and am going to have to look at some more of your video's (and the patch work one)! P.S. I can't believe made all this with out really using the pattern pieces? 😮 I couldn't do that Thanks again

I struggle with the terminology of “I invented this thing as I went along” with the things I knit. More math, but also easier to redo than my sewing attempts. I usually say "I made it up". As someone who has trouble following instructions, patterns are hard for me. But I will math all day long.

Ok, you asked.... lace, I see some pretty curtains or warm weather garments, also note that lace can be cut apart in strip to then add to ruffles or edges. The slight color difference is most likely dye-lot variations.

I want to thank you for always including when you take breaks! It has on several occasions reminded me to eat, go to bed, and that it does, in fact, take a while to actually make stuff and I cannot just whip something up in just a few hours.

Ok two things. 1. How did you NOT GIVE US THE TOTAL NUMBER of pockets?!?! You’re killin me! (Jk, but I am curious how many you fit in this one project!) And 2. When you said split side I was like…of course she’ll make it that! Well done! What a fun project. I feel like you’re making up for decades of clothing being bereft of pockets. And I’m here for it. ETA: Oh good gawd. I just saw the title thumbnail that says 39 pockets. lol. Ignore me!

This reminds me of a Pick Pocket Lady”. The lady would wear an apron or long skirt with lots of pockets that had candy or small prizes and the kids could pick a pocket. This was something popular at church fall festivals or parades.

Zippers were invented in 1917. So likely a decade or even more, as a guess, to get into common use even in cities. Especially with the depression followed by the war years. If you knew about zippers, you might not live in an area were they were available. Where my parents grew up only one person owned a vehicle. They took the train to travel between towns. Dad grew up in the big city. Population 500. He met Mom at a local dance. Small town girl who came to the dance on the train. Even today I retired to an area where if you want some things you either drive several hours or order online. Or figure out another solution. If you know what you are ordering, easy. But if looking for a product you have never used before and have never seen, you tend to wait until you are in a city were you can see it and maybe talk to someone about it. A lot of old clothing from the 30s and forties still use snaps and hooks . Especially home sewn garments. Likely because it was what was available or affordable. People also tended to remove things like buttons, etc, from garments to old to repair. I inherited buttons, buckles, and old zippers ripped from clothing before becoming rags. I still do this. The old zippers were built to last. I have a skating skirt my mother made me in the 60s with left over fabric. The waistband has a button, but the rest fastens with snaps. Something a modern-day sewer would never think to do. So instructions for zippers back then make since. Microwaves use to come with cooking books when they first came out as no one knew how to use them. A simular situation. The dress looks really cute on you.

I love watching your videos. You are sooo down to earth and real. I am 54 and learning to sew via UA-cam. I have not succeeded to sew garments for myself although I really want to. I have completed Lego bags with draw strings, A full on Diaper bag (took 6 months) but I did finish it and gave it to my Niece in law. Also baby dresses, nursing covers and mobi wraps for baby and Moms or Dads. Keep up the good work and I think you just might convince me to wing it and sew myself something without a pattern. Some of those patterns are so complicated and hard to understand. Anyways Blessings from Niagara on the Lake Ontario Canada

Lip reading is a bit of a myth. We form most sounds inside our mouth or even in our throat. But only our lip movement or at most the tip of our tongue and our teeth are visible. That's why finding out exact words by lip reading is almost impossible. Linguistic nerding aside - what a fun project and video. Thank you for that!

My other conclusion about the Mexican folkloric dance skirts: in modern times, outfits are used a lot by dance groups and it makes sense for the garments to be adjustable as multiple women in the group can don the garments, regardless of size. Source: am Mexican 🇲🇽
